How 10G and VLANs keep the Las Vegas casino running

The Venetian has 7,000 guest rooms, a 120,000 square foot casino, waterways, gondolas, frescoes, a convention center, retail shops, a bank, 18 world-class restaurants and its own police force. HP ProCurve 8200s anchor the 10G core, while ProCurve 4000s aggregate 100Mbps links from ProCurve 3500s provisioning work-group VLANs from the wiring closets. The Venetian has divvied up its network into 98 VLANs, a sampling of which is shown here. Venetian selected HP ProCurve switches, like the 8200s and 3500s, for simplified management and reliability. CTO Steve Vollmer says the Venetian network saves the resort 10 to 15 seconds during guest check-in and check-out, which translates to a savings of nearly 30 hours a day just in one department. But he's still looking for VoIP's "killer app" and is not sold on wireless LANs.
