    Tech's all-time top 25 flops 22/01/2008 11:20:32

Imagine how different the tech industry might have been had Gary Kildall accepted IBM's offer, back in 1980, to license his computer operating system for a top-secret project. CP/M would have been the OS that shipped with the original IBM PC, and the world might never have heard the name of Kildall's competitor, who eventually accepted the contract: a Mr. Bill Gates.

    Who Wants to Be a Mac-Illionaire? 30/08/2000 12:01:01

Sure, the stock market looks shaky now. But Apple Computer Inc. looked like a bad bet on July 10, 1997 - the day its stock price fell to a low of $12.75 a share. What if you were able to buy 500 shares then and sell them when Apple peaked at $150.38 a share last March? Assuming a 10 percent capital gains tax, you'd end up with a tidy profit in the neighborhood of $61,931.25. What should you do with all that money?

SAN FRANCISCO (07/26/2000) - Two well-priced 600-by-1200-dpi scanners join the SOHO ranks this month. The Umax Technologies Inc. Astra 3400 produced pleasing color and line-art results. The Hewlett-Packard Co. ScanJet 4300C created better images on our lower-resolution, 75-dpi color and 300-dpi black and white tests. Its handy dual interface gives users two connectivity options--something only one other SOHO scanner on the chart offers. Our corporate list remains unchanged.

    Reliable Networked Faxing 06/07/2000 12:01:01

Faxing from your computer is straightforward if you're a single user; since all new Macs come with a lite version of Smith Micro's FaxSTF software, you just add a fax modem and you're in business. It would be impractical and wasteful to outfit an entire office with fax modems and individually dedicated phone lines, but until now the only Mac-based products for network faxing were outdated and unsupported. That's why the U.S. debut of Glenwarne Ltd.'s FaxElite networked fax software is such a welcome development; with FaxElite, companies can easily and economically bring faxing to every user's desktop.
