Led by strong sales in its storage and server management group, Symantec on Wednesday reported a 16 percent jump in revenue for its first quarter of fiscal 2009.

Being an optimist, I like to think that storage management is or will be getting better. It's hard, however, to ignore the fact that many admins don't know much about what's going on in the storage boxes they are sitting on. And it's not their fault, as management has been the Cinderella of storage apps for many years, and she hasn't found a prince to rescue her quite yet.

Symantec's storage arm, Veritas, announced Tuesday that it has combined its online storage management software with Citrix Systems Xen Hypervisor to develop an x86 server virtualization platform. The product is expected to be available this fall, according to Aaron Aubrecht, senior director of product management and engineering for Veritas' Storage Foundation group.
