A number of Chinese software companies have joined forces with overseas vendors such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Novell to form the China Open Source Software Promotion Alliance, China's first open-source software organization, several Chinese media reported Wednesday.

Chinese antivirus researchers have uncovered a modified variant of the Code Red worm, dubbed Code Blue, that has the potential to cause more damage to users of Microsoft Corp. Windows NT and Windows 2000 than earlier Code Red variants, according to a statement released Friday by Beijing-based software vendor Kingsoft Corp.

While the market for desktop productivity applications in much of the world is dominated by Microsoft Corp.'s Office application suite, one mainland Chinese company is not willing to back down in its local market. Beijing-based Kingsoft Corp. announced on Wednesday the introduction of its WPS Office suite of desktop applications, just one month before Microsoft's planned launch of Office XP in mainland China.
