Makers and users of supercomputers also like to brag about things like the number of processors, the amount of memory and the bandwidth available for moving data about.

Open source technologies including Apache's Struts Java development framework and Jackrabbit content repository were among the projects debuting or getting upgraded at the ApacheCon conference in Texas last week.

My city's symphony orchestra is marvelous. In a lesser setting, any of the orchestra's musicians would be a marquee soloist, front and center. Even though Hall wishes he could have 50 hours in a day and use Star Trek transporters instead of planes to save time, he managed to take the time to speak with Computerworld about his life, open source, Linux International and the upcoming conference.

Microsoft is preparing to launch a certification program for "elite" IT architects. The program, which is currently in beta, will produce Microsoft Certified Architects, who are project leaders with broad and deep understanding of technologies and enterprise architectural frameworks. The software giant says it expects the program to be in full swing in the first half of 2006.

The SCO Group's slander lawsuit against Novell is now set to enter the discovery phase after Novell's attempts to again halt proceedings failed. The judge in the bitter legal battle denied Novell's second motion to dismiss the case late Monday.

An international consortium of 28 defense-oriented companies hopes to develop standards for a network-centric framework that allows a variety of communications and information systems and sensors to interact on a global scale.
