Novell insists it is not abandoning its NetWare install base with the upcoming release of its Open Enterprise Server (OES), but its message was greeted with both enthusiasm and skepticism when the firm stopped in Toronto on Thursday as part of a North American tour.

Sun Microsystems has released Sun ONE Identity Server 6.0, a system that manages not only the identity and authentication mechanism of users on large, disparate enterprise networks, but also addresses end-user log-in headaches via federated identity management based on a specification released by the Liberty Alliance Project last July.

Novell next Wednesday will announce its next-generation network operating system, NetWare 6.5, which includes browser-based portal and team services functions, directory integration and an application server for Web services.

Recently, Novell announced it is joining the Liberty Alliance project, the organization initiated by Sun as a counterweight to the since discontinued "Hailstorm" initiative from Microsoft. The Liberty Alliance project is initially designed to allow a single sign-on solution for affiliated Web sites as part of a future design encompassing most aspects of the "Web services" technologies.
