British mobile network operator Vodafone Group has received approval from India's Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, to buy up to 49 percent of the equity of Bharti Enterprises in Delhi, the holding company for Bharti Tele-Ventures, a large mobile and fixed line telephone operator. The Indian government has to approve foreign investment in telecommunications companies.

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), the largest regional telecommunications operator in Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) posted revenue of S$3.02 billion (AUD$2.5 billion) for its first quarter ended June 30, 2004, 11.5 percent higher than the equivalent figure last year, the company said in a statement Thursday.

Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. (SingTel) has posted a net profit excluding special items of S$2.85 billion (US$1.69 billion as of March 31, the last day of the period being reported) for the year ended March 31, 2004, 32 percent higher than the S$2.17 billion profit recorded the previous year.

Singapore Telecommunications announced a 13.9 percent rise in net profits for its second quarter ended Sept. 30 2003, on revenue up 15.7 percent over the year-earlier period.

Indian telecommunications carrier Bharti Group and Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) have finished building their joint US$250 million i2i cable connecting the two countries. The cable will enter commercial service within the next four weeks, SingTel said in a statement late Monday

The Singapore government will pay a total of S$1.94 billion ($US1.12 billion) to Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) and StarHub as compensation for bringing forward full deregulation of Singapore's telecommunications market.
