As the NBN construction chugs along in Tasmania, debate on the mainland continues as to whether laying the fibre optic cables underground is more advantageous than putting them in existing overhead infrastructure. Many industry experts have weighed in on the debate, what are your thoughts?
Honestly i dont think it really matters. when im walking or driving down the street, i rarely notice ANY cables at all, unless a tree fell on them. I think a balanced approach is required - where it is cost effective do it, otherwise overhead.
Communication technician writes: There is enough pipes in most streets structured after the 1970's to get near the property but thats when you decide how much restating of earth works is required to get FTH to the house. The Old PMG days before 1975 most of that side street structure is unusable. You could end up costing contractors $1-2000 /metre cutting concrete, pulling pavers chopping tree roots, lifting roofs ,ladder work, various safety procedures with power, gas, watr, etc.Whenever possible go underground but it does necessitate micro managing of ,as above, pipe to house information. The problem I see with Pole work is if that utility needs to replace the pole
With all this talk of climate change and the Actual changes we are seeing (more severe storm, bushfires etc) it seems ridiculous to consider installing anything as vital as a Next Generation network overheaed. With overhead installation of cables, what do you think will happen in the next bushfire situation when we loose the digital cable that feeds TV & Radio, Internet and Telephone

Reconciling Datacenter consolidation and security: It starts with an integrated approach
There is no question that datacenter consolidation has gone mainstream. A recent IDG Research survey of IT managers found that three out of four organizations are in the midst of, or just completing, consolidation of multiple applications or systems onto a smaller number of servers. Improving performance and availability was the key driver of consolidation efforts for 85% of those surveyed.
