Google News had a hiccup overnight, close on the heels of last week's massive outage that affected most Google products.

Will the enterprise consider using something more reliable?

Will this hurt cloud adoption in the enterprise?

The CIOs and industry professionals who spoke to Computerworld tend to think not.

Cloud computing $$$ don't add up.

When you look at the cloud computing providers, the ones that are truely cheap don't offer any real support or contact details if something goes wrong. You basically get shunted into the "File a ticket and we'll reply in 2 hours" pile.

That's not really the way to run a business. If something goes wrong, you'll be sitting there telling you boss. "Well... We don't know why it broke, we don't know when it will be back, but we filed a ticket 2 hours ago." The only number you can call is the one for setting up an account or changing your CC details.

Cloud Computing fears.

The main obstacle to Cloud Computing is Managements fears of downtime.. Most businesses are totally dependent on their software. With every phone order, the average wholesaler needs to search thru 100,000 stocked items via ten different OEM codes. These searches and a subsequent 'in stock' check are not possible without their software. A 30 minute downtime can produce a hundred angry customers! With Cloud, you could be down for the day. With in-house hardware and database replication, maximum downtime from a server or network failure is 5 minutes. There is also a growing 'cloud' over the future stability of the Internet.. It is being compromised on many fronts.

Cloud Computing Reliability is irrelevant in Oz

You need the bandwidth to service it and in Australia, we don't have value for $ in terms of bandwidth.

It should be better than in-house because data centre infrastructure should be a lot better than your typical IT closet. I think the biggest thing hurting cloud adoption in Australia, is that unlike our American cousins, we don't actually like buzz words - we like tangible, practical solutions. I think if we started by calling it what it is, something like "hosted applications" or "pay-per-use servers", our adoption rates in this country would pick up. Downtime is always a part of life so no, i don't think one incident at Google is a convincing reason for CIO's to NOT do something.

You would think that one incident is not enough however there is enough paranoia surrounding such incidents to frighten off large companies from entertaining the idea. Especially in the United States.
