Cable & Wireless PLC has agreed to purchase PSINet Japan, the Japanese unit of bankrupt Internet service provider PSINet Inc., the companies announced Monday.

Just weeks after launching a new service that allows large enterprise customers to prioritize applications traveling over their WANs, Ardent Communications Inc., formerly known as CAIS Internet Inc., laid off about 50 salespeople.

Experiencing triple-digit growth each year since its 1995 founding, the company needed to find a way to get extra productivity out of its current employees--or face the disagreeable prospect of turning away work. "It wasn't a matter of cutting expenses; it was a question of long-term viability," says Cal Yonker, Crestone's president.

Making good on its plans to push into new markets, Santa Clara, California-based 3Com on Monday unveiled a corporate division that will develop products to bring high-speed broadband services to hotels, housing complexes, and airports.

Cabletron Systems on Monday announced that it has reached a definitive agreement for the sale of its FlowPoint DSL subsidiary to Efficient Networks of Dallas.
