Local management restructure a priority for Ingram

While senior management at Ingram Micro and Tech Pacific have issued assurances to staff concerned about their future employment, both will be nervously waiting to hear news of their own.

It has already been announced that Tech Pacific CEO, Shailendra Gupta - along with its CFO, Guy Freeland - will be retained as part of Ingram Micro Asia's senior management. One of Gupta's most pressing duties will be to formalise individual country management teams across the region.

Current Ingram Micro Australia boss, Steve Rust, said he had been told it was a high priority and that Gupta's team would be working on finalising those arrangements during the next few weeks.

"I will be putting my hat in the ring," Rust said.

Tech Pacific Australia's managing director, Kerry Baillie, is the other obvious candidate. He has also expressed an interest in the role.

"In the three years I've been in Australia, it's been wonderful," he said. "I have made a lot of contacts - both with vendors and resellers - that are friends and have been good to me. I would be keen to continue."

It is not known at this stage if there are any other candidates for the top job. But other duplications Gupta will have to consider when formalising the local management team will include senior positions in product procurement, sales, marketing and administration.

However, Rust was keen to play down any speculation that the integration process would mean job losses for employees of both companies.

"This investment has been made to build the business for growth, not contraction," he said.

Baillie suggested the takeover should be viewed as a positive in career terms for Tech Pacific staff because they would now be employed by the largest IT distributor in the world. He said there was no reason all staff could not be retained in the short term.
