SAN FRANCISCO (02/03/2000) - Centra Software Inc.'s share value more than doubled today following the company's IPO (initial public offering).
Centra, which sells software that enables real-time online learning and business collaboration, saw its stock price rise 137.5 percent, reaching US$33.25 at the close of trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange, up from the initial offering price of $14.
The shares were sold through underwriters led by Robertson Stephens Inc., Chase H&Q, and Dain Rauscher Wessels.
Analysts said the steep rise in value reflects the hot niche of business-to-business collaboration technology, as well as the general fascination with technology -based IPOs. They also said the steep rise in share value is likely to settle down to a more moderate level in the coming weeks.
"They are one of the leaders in the segment of the 'e-learning' market, but that doesn't necessarily mean Centra is on the way to millions and millions of bucks," said Jim Ayube, senior analyst with market research company Aberdeen Group Inc. "A lot of companies still don't get the advantage of all that e-learning can do."
Centra, in Lexington, Massachusetts, can be reached at +1-781-861-7000, or at http://www.centra.com/.
