The mother of all construction sites

A vertical business-to-business portal built specifically for Australia's construction industry will be ready for launch in around six weeks.

Joining the growing number of virtual industry marketplaces, ConstructOne has been six months in the making and is the work of Orbit, run by ex-construction and management consultant executives Eric Meis, Mike Bloomfield, Dinuke Ranasinghe and Oz Ozturk.

Backed by Chifley Exchange dot-com incubator off-shoot, iChifley, the portal already has the support of "a lot" of the major construction companies, Steve Peacock, head of iChifley, said.

Peacock would not reveal which companies are involved, but said the portal will target large and medium construction companies.

The site will provide a marketplace for construction companies, customers and vendors to trade with one another. Additionally, the site will provide content including news, industry information and tenders, he said.

"It will be an information source and tool for everyone in the construction industry."

The first stage of the site will be the development of a media portal, which, according to Peacock, will be used to draw attention to the marketplace.

ConstructOne will develop content relationships with traditional news organisations in the construction industry as well as generate, aggregate and create its own content.

"We want to create a construction Reuters, a construction AAP and a construction Bloomberg," Peacock said.

Following that, the site will provide B2B capabilities including buying and selling of equipment and material, he said.
