IBM will make next-generation optical networking chips for e-business applications with Scottish optical components company Kymata Ltd. under a multi-year agreement announced Tuesday.
IBM and Kymata plan to develop optical chips for driving data and information at higher speeds across optical networks, according to their agreement. IBM is licensing its siliconoxynitride process technology and pump laser technology to Kymata for the project. The products of the partnership should be available in the first half of 2001, according to the release.
IBM acquired a minority stake of undisclosed size in Kymata -- a privately held startup in Livingston, Scotland founded in February 1998. Kymata designs planar integrated optical components and subsystems based on silica-on-silicon technology for the telecommunications and data communications industry.
