NBN will spend more close to $40 million on training and awareness campaigns to boost the National Broadband Network construction workforce, the company announced this morning.
The intention is to almost double the rollout workforce to 9000, according to NBN.
"To bring high speed broadband to Australians faster, our delivery partners will need a bigger pool of trained, skilled workers, NBN's CEO, Bill Morrow, said in a statement.
The government-owned company is in the process of signing agreements with TAFEs and registered training organisations, and a skills register will be set up to help record worker accreditations, a statement from NBN said.
NBN construction partners would look at options to provide older workers with flexible career options, the company said.
The company wants to attract and workers finishing other construction jobs to the network rollout.
"Both the rapid roll out plan and the multi-technology mix means we need more people in our united partnership to connect eight million happy homes by 2020," Morrow said.
"Together we aim to bring high speed broadband to Australians to bridge the digital divide and create new opportunities for business, health, education and entertainment."
NBN earlier this year signed new construction contracts with Downer, Transfield, Visionstream, Fulton Hogan and WBHO.
Communications minister Malcolm Turnbull in June revealed NBN had hit its target for the number of premises able to order services .
More than 1.1 million homes and businesses are able to order NBN services.
