Tasmania’s Glenorchy Council is shifting its workloads from on premise to TechnologyOne’s cloud service to improve staff mobility
Glenorchy City Council ICT project officer Anna Holland said that a large number of its staff are field workers who come in and out of the office between jobs to collect paperwork.
“Half the team still use clipboards and paper. By moving to the cloud we can replace this with tablets and smart mobile devices so that field staff can access all their information while out in the field,” she said.
Council staff are currently using Android smartphones. The council also has some iPads but has recognised that its field workers will need a tough device that can withstand getting dropped.
“We’re developing a mobile strategy to come up with some ideas,” she said.
According to Holland, the TechnologyOne cloud will reduce risk for the council as it has built in disaster recovery and active-active data configuration.
“We sometimes have downtime on our internal servers so we are hoping with TechOne’s cloud that availability will be better than what we can provide in-house,” she said.
She added that it couldn’t afford to maintain in-house support for its IT infrastructure which was aging and needed updating.
“With technology changing so rapidly, it was hard for our small team to keep pace. The cloud strategy takes care of all of this for us, and enables access to information anywhere, at any time and from any device. It also empowers council to be more flexible to rapidly adopt new technology as it becomes available,” she said.Read more: Telstra to resell SoftLayer IaaS services
In addition, Glenorchy City Council is rolling out TechnologyOne’s OneCouncil software. The software is designed to integrate information from council’s operational systems into one platform.
“We want to streamline our internal processes [with OneCouncil] and will be talking to the vendor about the best ways of doing things,” said Holland.
