Cunningham Lindsey uses Wi-Fi units to work during natural disasters

Solution was trialled during 2013 Queensland floods to process insurance claims

After trialling a Wi-Fi unit during the Queensland floods in 2013 to process insurance claims in a timely fashion, Cunningham Lindsey rolled out Wi-Fi access points to its 48 Australian offices.

The firm provides loss adjusting and insurance claim management services throughout Australia.

“The impact of the floods brought logistical issues, but with this [Wi-Fi] device, these were minimised,” said Cunningham Lindsey's national IT manager, Brian Kable.

“We were able to deploy Wi-Fi access points up into the Bundaberg zone, which meant our response team was able to connect to our network and start processing [claims] almost immediately. This meant there was no delay added to our client response capability.

“The guys were highly impressed that they could pull up in their car at 5am, download their work and start planning what they needed to do while they were still in their car,” he said.

Azzurri Communications’ comUnity Wi-Fi access points are installed in all 48 offices and provide workers with Internet access when they are out in the field.

The vendor is also Cunningham Lindsey’s sole IT supplier after being awarded a tender in December 2012.

At the time, the company had an ageing PABX system at 40 offices and multiple suppliers with different service level agreements (SLAs).

“I’ve got five people reporting to me who are looking after IT. We had numerous single points of failure and if one element was overlooked, the results could be disastrous,” he said.

Azzurri Communications introduced an integrated data/voice network called comUnity Voice in 2013. This led to a reduction in operational costs and removal of the PABX system.

“We chose comUnity Voice because we needed something robust and reliable which had the flexibility to handle future growth. By replacing our legacy phone systems with IP telephone handsets and video phones, we now have a unified communications [UC] system.”

This UC system has allowed staff to connect with their colleagues in Cunningham Lindsey branches across Australia.
