Sydney startup Canva will move into the mobile space with the release of a graphic design app for the iPad.
Canva has created a touch-based iPad version of its popular Web-based app for casual creatives. The app looks nearly identical and includes all the same features, with the added ability to use the iPad camera to quickly capture an image for production in the app.
Like the Web version, the iPad app is free to download and includes an assortment of free stock images. Users can also upload photos from their device or Facebook account or pay for one-time use of a premium stock image at $1 a piece.
Canva CEO Melanie Perkins said Canva will support other kinds of mobile devices in the future, but didn’t say which ones.
Canva has added 870,000 users since it launched 13 months ago. Users have created 6.2 million designs, including 1.27 million in the last month alone.
The company has seen 35 per cent average revenue growth month-on month for the last six months, said Canva co-founder Cliff Obrecht.
Canva has received support from several big tech names. Google Maps co-founder Lars Rasmussen is an investor and the startup recently hired former Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki.
At a breakfast this week hosted by Canva, Rasmussen said Canva has stood out from other startups in Australia because it addresses a global audience.
“When you look at startups in Australia, there are a number of them that want to be Uber,” he said.
“There’s nothing wrong with it, but when I look for a startup to get involved with in Australia, I want one that addresses the whole world. It just happens to be in Australia.”
