Qantas (ASX: QAN) is warning customers to hang up on an automated call scam which claims they have won a travel prize or credit points towards their next holiday.
According to the airline, travellers have received a call to their landline or mobile phone and, if they answer, hear a recorded message which claims to be from Qantas. The message claims that because the person has recently booked a flight with the airline, they have won a travel prize or credit points worth $999 towards their next holiday.
To claim the prize, the customer is asked to press 1 on their phone. They are then put through to a scammer who will ask if the traveller is over 30 years of age and if they have a valid credit card. The scammer then asks for their credit card details so that the prize can be processed.

However, a Qantas spokesperson warned that if people hand over their credit card details, money will be siphoned out of their bank account.
“These scammers appear to be persistent, with some customers reporting that they have received several of these calls in one day,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
“Unfortunately scammers pay no heed to private phone numbers or numbers listed on the Do Not Call Register, so if you have a number like this, you can still expect to receive this call.”
According to the spokesperson, Qantas consultants will “always call” customers directly to discuss their travel bookings.
Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the scam calls.
