NBN transit network hits terabit speeds in Toowoomba trial

The trial was run over a 1066 kilometre fibre optic ring on the NBN Co’s transit network

A trial conducted earlier this month by NBN Co and optical transmission equipment supplier Coriant reached speeds of 1 terabit per second over a 1066 kilometre loop of fibre in Toowoomba, Queensland. The trial on NBN Co’s transit network demonstrated a 35 per cent improvement in spectral efficiency, according to Coriant.

NBN Co’s transit network is built using optical fibre made available by third party carriers on long term leases and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) equipment that provides connectivity from the access networks, including fibre and wireless, through to points of interconnect with the NBN Co’s wholesale customers.

According to NBN Co, the trial results meant that a maximum theoretical transmission capacity of 13 Tbps could be carried on existing hardware and fibre over a distance up to 1600km.

Coriant provided hiT 7300 DWDM system hardware including FlexiGrid technology. Using FlexiGrid, an operator can adapt the wavelength grid to the needs of high capacity networks as well as increase spectral efficiency and the overall capacity of the system. NBN Co used Coriant’s technology to maximise the use of existing fibre optic infrastructure for the trial.

According to NBN Co CTO Gary McLaren, the trial demonstrated that established backbone infrastructure can be upgraded to provide extra capacity for the NBN as the rollout continues.
