Cisco has been busy cranking out new certifications this year, leading one to wonder if training programs are easier sell than enterprise equipment these days. The vendor recently added a 12th focused certification to its Cisco Qualified Specialist program.
The Cisco Optical Specialist 1 aims to validate the knowledge and expertise required to design, install, operate and maintain Cisco optical network systems. Those who attain the certification will understand the protocols and underlying technology of an array of acronyms for optical systems. What's more, certified individuals should be able to describe, operate and troubleshoot Cisco optical gear in metropolitan and regional environments.
Covered technologies include SONET/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), Dynamic Packet Transport/Resilient Packet Ring (DPT/RPR), packet-over-SONET (POS), optical cross connects, Ethernet over optical and element management.
To obtain the certification, candidates must pass the Cisco Optical Specialist 1 exam #9E0-611. Exams are available through Virtual University Enterprises (VUE) and Prometric.
Training is available from Authorized Cisco Learning Partners.
