Abbott's working group mulls online learning

Public comments sought by 30 March.

A Coalition working group will examine how Australian higher education can better embrace online learning, announced Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

“The growth of online learning presents both an opportunity and challenge for higher education institutions and the economy more broadly,” according to the announcement on Abbott’s website.

“It also presents an opportunity to provide students with more flexible and affordable tertiary education and to boost productivity and quality by blending online learning into existing courses. With online learning, we have the opportunity to take Australian research and knowledge to the world, complementing existing efforts.

“At the same time, we must be vigilant to protect our universities’ strong higher education record, international rankings and reputation.”

The working group will be chaired by federal MP Alan Tudge. Federal MP Karen Andrews will serve as deputy MP. Other members of the group are: senators Fiona Nash and Stephen Parry, and federal MPs Nola Marino and Rowan Ramsey.

The working group has invited submissions from universities and other higher learning providers, academics, students and other relevant organisations. The submissions deadline is 30 March.
