The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has revamped its website and created new content focusing on consumer rights.
ACCC chairman Rod Sims said its market research that it commissioned in 2012 found consumer rights to be one of Australians' main areas of interests when searching for information related to the ACCC. Business practices and regulated infrastructure were the other main areas of interest, Sims said.
The ACCC has created new sections on its site dedicated to these main areas of interests.
In addition, the revamped website contains educational videos about consumer rights and links to the ACCC’s Facebook page and Twitter profile.
“One of the key aims was to develop a website that meets the needs of the organisation now while allowing us to take advantage of further technological advancement, and the project team has definitely delivered,” Sims said.
To meet the federal government’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, ACCC has included a text-to-speech function on its new website for people with impaired vision. The guidelines were put in place so that people with disabilities can easily use all government websites.
According to Sims, providing all Australians with easier access to the Commission’s services was a key reason behind the site upgrade.
“We have introduced various features to improve people’s access to the site, including Read-Speaker which will read the text on a website page out loud,” he said in a statement.
