NBN fixed wireless and satellite speeds to double

Communications minister Stephen Conroy has announced that NBN Co will double the speeds offered by the National Broadband Network’s (NBN) fixed wireless and satellite services.
Conroy said the speed of NBN fixed wireless services will be doubled by the middle of 2013.
Fixed wireless and satellite speeds will be increased to 25/5Mbps following testing, compared to the current 12/1Mbps for both services.
“This is a quantum leap for broadband services in the most remotest areas of Australia,” Conroy told the ABC’s AM program this morning.
NBN Co said wholesale prices would be fixed at $27 per month for the 25/5Mbps service and $24 for the 12/1Mbps service.
The fixed wireless network is expected to be completed by 2015 and will serve around 4 per cent of Australia’s population, covering around 500,000 premises.
The NBN’s satellite service will serve around 3 per cent of the population, with NBN Co currently operating on an interim satellite service at 6/1Mbps.
As part of the rollout for the NBN's fixed wireless service, NBN Co began lodging development applications (DAs) for fixed wireless towers mid last year; however, the process has been fraught, with residents in some areas objecting to construction of network infrastructure.
To launch the NBN’s satellite service in 2015, two Ka-band satellites will be launched into space where the satellites will orbit 35,786 km above the earth’s equator.
Space Systems/Loral are building the two satellites in a contract worth $620 million.
