Online retail sales hit $12.6 billion in the 12 months to November 2012, according to the NAB Online Retail Sales Index.
Online retail sales accounted for just 5.7 per cent of traditional bricks and mortar retail sales for the 12 months to October 2012.
Online sales increased 27 per cent in November, compared to 26 per cent in October.
While the index rose 241 points, compared to 209 points in October, NAB said November is typically a peak buying period for online sales in the lead-up to Christmas.
“In the two previous years, there has been a notable decline in online sales in December, due to the delivery time required prior to Christmas. As the online market matures, it will be interesting to observe whether consumers have greater confidence to make online purchases later in the month in 2012,” NAB stated in its report [PDF].
