iiNet is waiving disconnection and installation fees for Tasmanian customers affected by the recent bushfires.
Customers who have been affected by the bushfires will be able to cancel fixed line services for free; connect their service to an alternative premise if their home is uninhabitable; cancel internet contracts without penalty; and will not be charged installation costs at new premises on a continuing existing contract.
“We know this is a really tough time for some of our Tasmanian customers and we hope these relief options help take the pressure off,” iiNet CEO Michael Malone said in a statement.
Mat Conn, GM customer service at iiNet, told Computerworld Austrralia he could not reveal exact figures on how many customers the group had in Tasmania, but he said it had "thousands" in the state.
On Saturday Telstra also announced measures for those affected by bushfires in the Tasman Peninsula and Upper Derwent in Tasmania.
It includes free use of public phones in affected areas; free call diversion from fixed numbers to a fixed line or mobile, regardless of the carrier; a one-off credit of $100 for Telstra mobile phone customers who do not have a fixed line home number with Telstra; and a $500 credit to customers’ fixed line accounts to help with connecting a Telstra phone service at a temporary premise and reconnecting a fixed phone service at a customer’s original premise.
Telstra is also waiving disconnection and early termination fees for BigPond services for residential and small business owners; and offering free connection for BigPond at an alternative address within 12 months and free replacement of modems and USB devices.
AAP reports there are still 40 bushfires burning in Tasmania, with up to 23,000 hectares burnt and around 100 people still unaccounted for.
