Telsta enters wholesale prepaid with 3G offer

Telstra will sell wholesale prepaid 3G services, allowing MVNOs to sell mobile service on the Telstra network.

The prepaid service provides customers access to parts of Telstra’s 3G 850 MHZ and 2100 MHz network. It does not include access to Telstra’s 4G network.

The prepaid product was “designed for wholesale customers who directly service the retail mobile market or mobile virtual network enablers who service the reseller market,” said Telstra wholesale group managing director, Stuart Lee. Customers can customise parts of the offering, he said.

Prepaid “is part of a broader program to develop and enhance” Telstra’s wholesale mobile services, he said. “We launched our 3G post-paid solution in January this year, with 10 customers signing with us to date. In this second phase we have developed and launched a mobile solution to support pre-paid 3G handheld and wireless broadband services.”

Telstra worked with ispONE to develop a wholesale product for managing customer accounts and services on the Telstra network. Ericsson built the network and online system, which supports real-time billing and charging.

Telstra’s entrance into wholesale prepaid services follows an announcement that Boost Mobile will resell Telstra’s Next G network. Boost previously resold access to the Optus network.
