First NBN fibre cable laid in Coffs Harbour

The first fibre cable has been laid in Coffs Harbour for the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The federal government also announced Coffs Harbour city council would receive $273,767 in funding to promote the NBN in the area.

Construction on the NBN has already begun on premises in the region, including 20,000 premises in Coffs Harbour, 10,000 premises Sawtell and premises in Boambee, Boambee East, Korora and Toormina.

“The fibre being hauled here in Coffs Harbour marks an important step in the rollout of the NBN on the Mid North Coast — it shows that work is underway to provide super-fast broadband to homes and businesses by early 2013,” Darren Rudd, NBN Co spokesperson, said in a statement.

Residents in the Coffs Harbour region will be switched onto the NBN from early next year, with Korora, Toormina and Boambee scheduled to be switched onto the network in the first half of 2014.

Around 15,000 homes in Coffs Harbour, Taree and Port Macquarie will be switched on to the NBN with fixed wireless.
