Apple is expected to announce an iPad mini at a media event in San Jose next week

Apple is expected to announce an iPad mini at a media event in San Jose next week.

The company sent invitations to the media overnight for an event at the California Theatre in San Jose. This is the first time in seven years that Apple has used this venue for a product launch.

Like always, Apple has been light on details with exactly what the event will reveal. The invitation sent to the media is simply titled "We've got a little more to show you".

Most observers suggest the word "little" points to an event that will unveil the much-rumoured iPad mini.

The media invitation comes at a time when the iPad mini rumour mill is in overdrive. Among the features expected to be seen on the iPad mini include a smaller 7.65in screen compared to the larger 9.7in display on the regular iPad, a display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1136 x 640, the smaller 8-pin 'Lightning' connector, and the same A5 processor used in the iPad 2.

A starting price of somewhere between $US250 to $US350 is expected. Wi-Fi and 3G versions are rumoured to be available, but there is no LTE 4G connectivity expected.

The Apple event is scheduled for Tuesday October 23 (4am Wednesday October 24 Australian time).
