NBN fibre rollout in ACT reaches established areas

Fibre cable for the National Broadband Network (NBN) has been laid in the Australian Capital Territory, the first cable to be laid in the state in an established area.
The distribution cable will link an exchange at Mitchell — 13kms from Canberra — to premises in Gungahlin.
The NBN rollout has already begun for around 15,000 premises in the ACT, including 2700 premises in Gungahlin.
“In parts of Gungahlin we’re aiming for construction to wrap up at the end of the year, which means home and business owners are expected to be able to connect to services over the NBN shortly after, including the main business and shopping precinct,” Darren Rudd, NBN Co spokesperson, said in a statement.
“In addition to the work under-way to connect parts of Gungahlin town centre, work is under planning or construction in the following suburbs: Amaroo; Ngunnawal; Franklin; Harrison; Mitchell; Nicholls; Palmerston; and Watson. NBN Co is aiming for construction in those suburbs to be completed during 2013.”
Construction will begin or be completed on around 13,500 premises in the ACT by mid-2015.
In a consultation paper released in August this year, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) proposed two points of interconnect to service premises in the ACT – one in Braddon and the other to be located in Queanbeyan, NSW which will primarily service ACT residents.
NBN Co also announced today that construction of the NBN was moving ahead in Tasmania, with the state to be the first in Australia to be fully connected to the network.
