APCA offers fraud prevention education program to SMB merchants

APCA research found that in 2011 there were 292,853 card not present incidents involving debit and credit cards

Payments industry regulator, The Australian Payments Clearing Association (APCA), has launched an online security awareness program designed to help small to medium merchants prevent credit card fraud.

The program, called Get Smart About Card Fraud Online, includes tips on how to avoid credit card skimming and fraud protection guidelines for merchants.

If merchants suspect they have been a victim of online fraud, they can find on the apca.com.au/getsmart/ website contact details for ANZ, Bank of Western Australia, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, Citibank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), Cuscal, St George and Westpac.

APCA chief executive Chris Hamilton said that some new merchants of the online space do not realise that they can reduce the risk of falling victim to online card fraud.

“Just as retailers carry out simple security checks when taking card payments face-to-face, certain checks need to be done when taking payments online,” he said in a statement.

“It’s also about recognising which transactions are particularly risky and dealing with them sensibly. If an order seems too good to be true, it probably is."

According to APCA research, card not present (CNP) fraud was an ongoing problem in Australia. It found that during the 2011 calendar year there were 292,853 CNP incidents involving debit and credit cards issued in Australia.
