Apple's online store goes quiet ahead of iPhone 5 debut

Access to the online Apple Store has been shut off in advance of today's expected introduction of the iPhone 5 and other new gear.

The Apple Store website simply informs visitors that "We'll be back. We're busy updating the Apple Store for you and will be back soon." Well, actually, it says that in more than a dozen languages on a rotating basis.

Apple traditionally cuts off access to its online store in advance of big announcements, then refreshes it with the new products highlighted a few hours later.

Apple is holding a media conference at 10 a.m. Pacific time in San Francisco, where it is widely expected to introduce its next generation smartphone, most likely a model that's thinner, features a 4-inch screen and boasts 4G LTE support. Apple is also expected to make other announcements, perhaps including new iPods and iPod touch devices. Pre-orders for iPhones are rumored to be starting on Friday. 

The iPhone 5 could produce enormous sales for Apple right away, Wall Street analysts say, with one touting the iPhone 5 as "the biggest upgrade in consumer electronics history."
