Compaq ships servers based on 1-GHz Alpha

Compaq Computer Corp. announced enhancements to its Tru64 Unix operating system and the first high-end AlphaServer GS Series servers based on its 1-GHz, 64-bit processor.

New features in Tru64 Unix include iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions' Directory Server, which will allow network managers to provide directory services for up to 200,000 users. Compaq is also including Aurema Inc.'s ARMTech technology, which allows network managers to dedicate server resources to applications, helping them ensure that business-critical user applications meet demands that can vary.

Probably the most significant part of the company's AlphaServer GS Series upgrade announcement is the fact that users will be able to mix 64-bit CPU (central processing unit) speeds within a single system.

By allowing corporate users to mix CPU speeds, GS Series customers can upgrade the systems they have without pulling out any CPUs. High-end GS Series AlphaServers have been shipping with the company's 730-MHz EV6 Alpha processor until now.

Additionally, Compaq said that its low-end AlphaServer DS Series systems will now be available with an 833-MHz, 64-bit Alpha processor. The AlphaServer GS Series systems support Tru64 Unix and/or the company's OpenVMS operating system. The AlphaServer DS Series systems also support Linux.

Compaq also introduced lower-cost certified Tru64 Unix-based AlphaServer systems and what it is calling its "9 Days Program." The 9 Days Program provides users with a commitment to a running system with Oracle's Oracle9i Real Application Clusters within nine days of receiving their order.

The 1-GHz Alpha processor is available now with all AlphaServer GS Series models, the eight-processor GS80, the 16-way GS160, and the GS320, which can support up to 32 processors.

The AlphaServer GS Series systems with the 1-GHz Alpha processor are immediately available. AlphaServer GS80 systems start at under US$95,000, AlphaServer GS160 systems under $255,000, and AlphaServer GS320 systems are priced under $565,000.

Prices for the AlphaServer DS Series systems with the 833-MHz Alpha processor start at $15,400. The DS Series systems are also available immediately.

The new version of Tru64 Unix will be pre-installed on Tru64 Unix AlphaServer systems starting in September.
