National Australia Bank (NAB) is to launch a new banking app for Windows Phone customers early next week.
“We are seeing quite a lot of customers now requesting, or have in the past, saying that they really want to be able to access an application or NAB through the Windows platform, particularly the Windows Phone,” the bank’s general manager of Digital Services, Chris Smith, said.
Users will be able to pin a live tail to the home screen of the app, which is a functionality that exists on the Windows platform but doesn’t exist on others, NAB said.
For example, using the exchange rates calculator, users can pin a currency conversion rate to their home screen and have it automatically update a couple times per hour.
The exchange rates calculator also allows users to calculate the type of rate such as telegraphic transfers, travellers’ cheques, or international drafts.
Users can locate the nearest ATM and branch from their current location via native Bing maps and receive directions and can measure the distance from their current location. It also provides branch opening hours.
The home screen is where customers can login to do their online banking using either their NAB ID and password or a four-digit password which they can set up when first loading the app.
NAB said customer requests was the main reason for its interest in developing a Windows Phone app.
“We’re listening to our customers’ requests as opposed to relying on data to purely drive the decisions for which platforms we will and won’t support,” the bank’s head of mobile and emerging technologies, Ben Forsyth, said.
“In excess of 80 per cent of our current mobile banking volumes are coming from apps, it’s very likely that people in that platform will gravitate towards the native app experience.”
IDC has projected that shipments of Windows Phone will displace Apple iOS to become the number two OS running smartphones in 2016, with Nokia, which is making Windows Phone-based devices, seen to be as strong in emerging markets.
