Virgin Australia launches domestic-only mobile boarding passes

iPhone users can receive their boarding pass via SMS for Virgin domestic flights

iPhone users boarding Virgin Australia domestic flights will be able to show their smartphone, rather than printing out a ticket, with the launch of SMS mobile boarding passes.

According to the airline operator, passengers can use their iPhone to access the Virgin Australia mobile website to book a flight and check in up to 24 hours prior to the flight’s departure. The check-in feature on the mobile website will send the passenger their boarding pass as an SMS.

A Virgin Australia spokeswoman said in a statement that the service is not currently available for international flights because travellers are required to present their passport upon check in.

In addition, the airline has developed an iPhone app called Virgin Australia Flight Specials for domestic and international flights.

Passengers can also view flight specials and discount fares, according to the airline. The app will allow users to enter in their specific travel criteria and sign-up for alerts so that they are notified when a flight special matches their criteria.

However, Android users will have to wait until later this year when the app is developed and released on the Android market place.

The app development follows the recent introduction of BoardConnect, a system which allows passengers to view content on their personal devices using Wi-Fi technology.

BoardConnect was rolled out to business and economy class passengers in mid-2012 following an agreement between the airline and Lufthansa Systems.
