Nexus 7 Android tablet to cost $319 in Australia

The Google Nexus 7, manufactured by ASUS, will be on sale later this month

The first tablet to run version 4.1 of Google's Android mobile platform — Jelly Bean — will launch later this month in Australia, retailing for $319 in stores including Harvey Norman, JB Hi Fi, Dick Smith, Bing Lee, The Good Guys, Officeworks and EB Games.

The Nexus 7, manufactured by ASUS, is a seven inch quad-core launched at Google's I/O developer conference.

The tablet uses an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU and includes 16GB of internal storage. In the US a cheaper 8GB version is also available.

The touchscreen display has a resolution of 1280x800, and according to ASUS the tablet's battery will last up to 9.5 hours.

The Nexus 7 includes Wi-Fi connectivity, but can't directly access 3G or 4G mobile networks.

Analysts believe that the Nexus 7 will eat into sales of Amazon's seven-inch Android-based Kindle Fire tablet, but is won't be an iPad killer.
