ICANN finally closes generic TLD applications

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has finally closed applications for the first round of generic top-level domains (TLDs), with ICANN receiving more than 1900 applications for new domains.
The process hit a hiccup in April, with a software error delaying the process.
Known Australian applicants include internet service provider iinet, the AFL and the Victorian and NSW state governments
ARI Registry Services, which aided those organisations with their applications, has revealed that it worked on 161 TLD applications (both in Australia and internationally). ARI said that it worked on a total of 85 generic TLD applications, 70 brand TLDs and six geographic TLDS.
"When applications opened in January, our target was to secure around 100 TLDs, so to reach 161 has far exceeded our expectations. Our goal was never to become the biggest, but we did want to be the best. I believe the results of our efforts and the calibre of our clients demonstrates that we are well on the way to becoming a force to be reckoned with," said Adrian Kinderis, CEO of ARI Registry Services.
"Non-disclosure statements restrict me from revealing our full client list at this point in time, but what I can say is that our technology will support some of the world's largest and most recognised brands within the electronics, media, telecommunications, automotive and banking segments.”
ICANN is intending to reveal the list of domains that have been applied for on 13 June.
