PowerTel is to increase capacity on its Sydney-to-Melbourne dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) optical backbone network, in response to growing corporate and wholesale demand.
The company claims backbone traffic in Australia is growing at more than 100 per cent per year, with a noticeable upsurge over the last few months.
The telecommunications carrier claims Nortel Networks' optical Internet technology will double capacity between Sydney and Melbourne and allow PowerTel to continue its competitive pricing policy while delivering high bandwidth, network intelligence and the industry's lowest cost per managed bit on an all-optical platform. Nortel is lending significant support to the scheme, like most networking vendors it hopes the widespread deployment of broadband will boost lagging sales.
