Woolworths opens virtual supermarket

Supermarket operator, Woolworths, has unveiled a virtual supermarket on the walls of Town Hall station in Sydney.

The installation, which features photos of more than 120 products, is activated by using the Woolworths iOS or Android application.

Customers scan the product barcodes off the wall, add them to the Woolworths app shopping list and pay for the groceries which are then delivered to their home.

Woolworths director of supermarkets, Tjeerd Jegen, said that the virtual supermarket will be at Town Hall for one week from February 20.

“We will take feedback from customers throughout this time. This experience will provide us with important information on how we can develop this concept into the future,” he said in a statement.

The virtual supermarket is located on the concourse level at Town Hall station, in between the Park Street and George Street exits.

In September 2011, the company launched an Android app which allows users to find their nearest store via GPS, and access offers for Everyday Rewards members and fuel savings vouchers.
