Telstra (ASX: TEL) has announced that its 4.2 million BigPond email accounts will transfer to Microsoft’s Windows Live service later this year.
The telco’s existing BigPond Webmail and Myinbox services will be slowly phased out as the migration takes place.
According to an update on the BigPond website, users will be able to keep their existing email address but may have to change their password if it is less than eight characters.
The BigPond update states: “Rest assured your email addresses will stay the same and you won't lose any emails, contacts or calendars. During the changeover, you'll also be able to transfer any photos or files you choose.”
New customers and existing users who have requested additional mailboxes will be put on the new platform straight away.
Telstra media, applications and user experience executive director, J-B Rousselot, said in a statement that it has set up a dedicated self- help website including videos, Q&A’s and updates on the progress of the changeover.
Telstra plans to email customers as soon as their new account is ready with details of how to update to the new service.
The planned switchover comes less than a week after reports that a number of BigPond email customers had not been receiving mail since 4 February.
