Amazon has released a new advertisement that takes a shot at the price of Apple’s iPad, emphasizing the lower cost of the Kindle e-reader and Android-based Kindle Fire tablet computer.
In the ad, seen below, a woman tells a man that her Kindle reader, which works well in sunlight, along with her kids’ two Kindle Fire tablets, which offer access to games, videos and more, cost less combined than his iPad.
Apple backers have fought back on the Web, pointing out that the Amazon devices aren't as good as the iPad and that Amazon is basically saying you need two devices to do what one iPad can do. What’s more, the Kindle Fire tablets are 8GB devices (plus free cloud storage for Amazon content), whereas the $500 iPad 2 has 16GB of storage.

The ad campaign comes on the tail of Samsung’s latest shot at Apple during its Super Bowl ad, which tweaked Apple fanboys and fangirls over their waiting in long lines outside Apple Stores for the next iPhone.
The Kindle Fire, which sells for about $200, is the current king of Android tablets, though still has a long way to go to catch the iPad in terms of sales. Recent market research reports show the iPad accounted for more than half of all tablet shipments in the fourth quarter of 2011, and that 6 million Kindle Fires sold during this past holiday season vs. more than 15 million iPads.
