Foxtel subscriber base grows

Subscription revenue increased by 5.1 per cent

Foxtel has announced an increase in subscriber numbers for the second half of 2011 despite a tough consumer market.

Subscription revenue increased by 5.1 per cent as the number of households opting for Foxtel's pay TV service jumped to 1.58 million, an increase of more than two per cent, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

The total number of subscribers, including wholesale subscribers and customers in the installation queue, rose to 1.66 million.

The company's half-year profit before tax was $107 million.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) was $280 million.

Foxtel CEO Richard Freudenstein said there were two stories in Foxtel's results.

"Existing customers love our product and are taking more and more of it," he said in a statement.

"But, as retail and consumer services companies are finding across Australia, it remains a tough environment in which to win new customers."

In the second half of 2011, 13.4 per cent of Foxtel subscribers cancelled their subscription, the company said.

Freudenstein said he was confident the comprehensive sporting coverage lined up for 2012 would attract new customers to Foxtel.
