NBN Co to launch fixed wireless network trial

Free service aimed at NBN first release sites

From April 2012, NBN Co will be offering a free trial of its fixed wireless network for six months to National Broadband Network (NBN) first release sites including Armidale, Tamworth and Toowoomba.

Telecommunications and internet service providers (ISPs) will have access to a 12 megabits per second (Mbps) download and 1 Mbps upload wholesale service.

This means ISPs can offer a potentially faster broadband service than what is currently available. Ballarat, Darwin and Geraldton are also set to be offered the trial.

The service will use 4G technology and is designed to serve a designated number of homes and businesses, each with its own wireless receiver.

An NBN Co spokesman said in a statement that it anticipated higher speeds would become available as technology advanced as the network was upgraded over time.

Service providers will also have the ability to facilitate pre-orders and pre-installations leading up to the April launch.
