Internode turns on IPv6 for new customers

Dual stack support of IPv4, IPv6 offered for all broadband services

Internode has become the first Australian broadband provider to make IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) available by default for new customers.

Although the IT industry has warned that IPv4 addresses will run out soon, the deployment of IPv6 in Australia has been limited with only a few internet service providers (ISPs) such as Internode and Telstra announcing they were rolling it out for customers.

In-depth: IPv6 technology guide.

Since 10 January this year, Internode has enabled dual stack support — allowing the concurrent operation of IPv4/IPv6 — for all new broadband services.

Existing customers can enable IPv6 at any time by visiting ‘My Internode’ on the company’s website and switching it on.

Internode managing director, Simon Hackett, said in a statement that it is “at the stage in IPv6 deployment where it was time for major ISPs to make it a transparent part of their customers’ experience.”

“Internode has enabled native IPv6 by default for all new customers, and all the Fritz!Box and Billion routers we sell now come with ‘IPv6 Inside’,” he said. “Our experience shows us that IPv6 is now fully capable of providing seamless, uninterrupted and efficient access to the Internet, dual-stacked with IPv4.”
