Optus appoints former Hutchison Telecoms chief as COO

Optus has appointed the former CEO of Hutchison Telecoms Australia, Kevin Russell, to the newly created role of chief operating officer (COO).

Russell will be responsible for running the number two telco’s consumer, small to medium business (SMB), wholesale and satellite divisions, as well as Optus’ wholly owned subsidiary, Virgin Mobile.

“I’m returning to Australia at a very exciting time in the telecoms industry with the rollout of 4G and the National Broadband Network (NBN) both gathering pace,” Russell said in a statement.

He will be based in Sydney and report to Optus chief executive, Paul O’Sullivan.

Russell held the role of CEO at Hutchison Telecoms Australia before joining Hutchison Three in the UK as its COO and subsequently, its chief executive.

According to Optus, Russell led the rollout of Australia’s first 3G network while he was the CEO of Hutchison Telecoms Australia.
