Telstra kicks off wholesale 3G service

Telstra has begun offering post-paid wholesale 3G services on its Next G network to resellers

The first phase of the project will offer post-paid mobile services to resellers with coverage across 97 per cent of the Australian population, operating in the network’s 850MHz to 2100MHz frequency.

Download speeds vary from 300 kilobits per second to one megabit per second depending on the device and location of the end user.

The second phase of the project will begin later in the year with the inclusion of prepaid mobile and wireless broadband services.

“This is a competitive and high quality product which delivers great coverage and speed to our wholesale customers,” the telco said in a statement. “We believe it is a competitive 3G offering in the wholesale market.”

According to reports in The Australian, the service may be superseded by plans of Optus and Vodafone to resell 4G long term evolution (LTE) services.

In September, Optus flagged a $500 million upgrade to its 3G network and the rollout of a new 4G LTE network.

The network, which will operate over the telco’s existing 1800MHz spectrum assets, will go live in Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Lake Macquarie and Hunter Valley areas in April, followed by Sydney, Melbourne and Perth by mid-2012.

The service will also be delivered to Brisbane and Adelaide for which the completion date is not yet known.
