Proposed media changes workable: Greens

The Australian Greens have described as workable, proposed changes to the rules governing the nation's communications sector.

The Federal Government's convergence review, in an interim report released on Thursday, recommends abolishing cross-media laws, establishing an independent regulator to replace the Australian Communications and Media Authority and new methods to maintain local content.

Greens Senator Scott Ludlam said the review appeared to have adapted some of the major ideas put to it in submissions.

The review had shown an "open mind" to combine the suggestions into a workable model for regulating the converged media environment.

"However, it's still early days," Senator Ludlum said, noting there was an inquiry under way into the print media as well as a classification review.

"There are important pieces of the puzzle still missing."

The final report, due next in March 2012, will consider the findings of the two other inquiries.
