Electronic Arts is continuing to expand its presence in the social gaming business with the acquisition of KlickNation, the video games company said Thursday.
Electronic Arts in Redwood City, California acquired earlier this year PopCap Games, a Seattle, Washington provider of games for mobile phones, tablets, PCs and social network sites. It also acquired Playfish, a creator of games for social networks, in 2009.
KlickNation in Sacramento, California is a developer of free-to-play role-playing games. It develops and publishes games for social platforms such as Facebook. Electronic Arts did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition.
The new team joins BioWare's existing social gaming team at BioWare San Francisco to form a new business unit, BioWare Social, focused on the development of role playing games for social networks, Electronic Arts said. BioWare Social will be led by former KlickNation CEO Mark Otero.
Electronic Arts acquired BioWare in 2008. The BioWare label was created in 2011, as a division of Electronic Arts, to focus on multiplatform role-playing, MMO (massively multiplayer online) and strategy games.
KlickNation's games include Superhero City, Age of Champions, Starship Command, and Six Gun Galaxy.
