Govt calls for applicants to its NBN education and skills program

The Federal Government has called for proposals for its NBN-Enabled Education and Skills Services (NBN-EESS) program, aimed at encouraging the development and trialling of education and skills-based online projects that will utilise the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The four-year, $27.2 million program seeks to develop and trial online educational and training packages for a nationwide rollout to schools and vocational training providers.

It aims to provide a more interactive learning opportunity for all Australians irrespective of geography, with the services to be delivered in regional and remote locations as well.

To be eligible for funding under the program, applicants must represent an education and skills institution, such as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or TAFE, school, university, industry representative, community organisation or not-for-profit organisation.

"This is a first step towards delivering projects that will provide all Australians with improved access to online education, training and skills services," Peter Garrett, minister for school education, said in a statement.

"Services developed through the program have the potential to allow students and teachers to access more information to support their classroom activities, and to collaborate with students and teachers around Australia."

According to Garrett, the initiative will complement the Digital Education Revolution, which has cost the government more than $2.4 billion.

Applications for funding close 5pm (AEST) on 3 February, 2012, with successful projects to be announced in early 2012.
