CBA's Kaching app still in test mode

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has revealed that its iPhone Kaching application, which was announced on 25 October 2011, is still not available from Apple’s App Store due to testing delays.

The app will allow users to wirelessly pay for goods and services using near field communications (NFC) technology.

It is designed to work with a specially designed case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S smartphones and, according to CBA, will be the world's first commercially available iPhone app that utilises NFC technology.

Speaking at an Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) Banking and Financial Services briefing, CBA business products and development executive general manager, Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, told delegates that while CBA staff, including herself, have access to the app, Apple is still testing Kaching before it goes on sale.

“It’s expected before the end of the year and we were hoping to hear back from Apple before they all break for the Thanksgiving holiday,” she said.

“It’s the timing with the App Store that every company has to go through and we’re already working on the second phase of it. Hopefully, people won’t have to wait too much longer for it.”

The Kaching app and its NFC features will eventually be rolled out to Android smartphones in the near future, but will launch exclusively on the iPhone first.
